It was a big night for America. The country was taken back from the precipice by a wave of Democratic victories. As one European Union politician said, "America’s long nightmare is over". And that’s the way it feels.
Democrats easily took back control of the House of Representatives. They needed sixteen seats, and they won over thirty. Control of the Senate is still up for grabs, pending the results of the Virginia race between Jim Webb and George Allen. The Democrat Webb leads by a slim margin, and if he wins, Democrats will retake control of the Senate. They have not had control of either body since the mid-term elections of 1994.
The people of this country have spoken loudly and clearly about their desire to change the course, especially as it pertains to the Iraq War. Let’s hope that the administration decides to listen to us.
