The Amish people take their cue from the biblical book of Romans, and wish to be of this world, but not in it. They ask only to be left alone to live a quiet life of faith. Now the world has descended upon them in a horrific act of violence. One can only hope that this tragedy does not compel the Amish to withdraw further from this world.
A member of a nearby community was interviewed and he likened the impact of this event on the Amish community to the impact that 9/11 had on all of us. At that time, he recalled, the whole world supported us by saying, "we are all American". Now, he said, "we are all Amish".
I am not parent, and I can’t imagine what it must be like to be one these days. How do you send your children off to school in the face of this violence that seems to occur nearly everyday now? As I heard several people say yesterday, when will it end?
