Last night I went to a fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina at Cecil’s in West Orange. If you haven’t been to this club, owned by world renowned jazz drummer Cecil Brooks III, you really owe it to yourself to pay the club a visit. It’s simply one of the best music venues that I’ve ever been to, and it’s right here in suburban NJ. There is great music every night of the week, comfortable seating, and a friendly staff, not to mention excellent food.
The format for last night was an open mic jam. These nights always bring out some extraordinary musicians, but this night was very special. The jam was led by a number of great New Orleans musicians. Admission to the club was free, but donations to aid the hurricane victims were being accepted. I had a friend in town from San Francisco, who’s a real lover of jazz and blues music. As we left the club he told me it was one of the best nights of live music he’d ever heard, anywhere.
Check the website for upcoming shows and visit the club for a great night out.
